Self-Love and Self Esteem
The lack of self-love and self-esteem are the biggest issues when a person is depressed. Achievements are satisfying but they don’t bring you happiness. Only your own self-image or self-worth can determine how you actually feel. Depression often feels like a heavy fog descending upon the mind, obscuring any sense of worth or value.
In these moments, it’s crucial to remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Reaching out to friends, family, or mental health professionals can provide the support and perspective needed to begin healing.
If you are struggling with your mental health, the NAMI HelpLine is here for you. Connect with a NAMI HelpLine volunteer. Available Mon-Fri 10 am to 10 pm ET 1-800-950-NAMI (6264), text HelpLine to 62640 or email helpline@nami.org and for Teens and Young Adults NAMI has a HelpLine just for you – Call 1-800-950-6264, chat, text “Friend” to 62640 or emial helpliine@nami.org.
Also, the 988 Lifeline provides 24/7 free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones, and best practices for professionals in the United States.
Practicing self-compassion and engaging in activities that bring joy or a sense of accomplishment can slowly rebuild a sense of self-worth. Talk back to your inner critic. Write down the automatic negative thoughts to get them out of your brain. Learn how you are blowing things out of proportion (you aren’t as bad as you are thinking). Replace the negative thought with three positive thoughts that contradict that thought. These are all small steps you can tac to help you feel better about yourself and learn to love yourself.
Celebrating small victories, no matter how insignificant they may seem, can make a significant difference. Additionally, mindfulness and meditation practices can help ground a person in the present moment, fostering a more positive and forgiving relationship with oneself. Keeping a daily gratitude journal can help someone have a more positive view also. We have one available in our store here:
Above all, it’s important to understand that it’s okay to not be okay. Healing is a journey, and each step forward, no matter how small, is a testament to one’s resilience and inner strength.
